Hanggai Band

The ethnic Chinese Mongolian folk music band Hanggai got its name from an old Mongolian word referring to a beautiful pasture with mountains, trees and brooks. Inspired by traditional Mongolian music, Hanggai plays many Mongolian instruments including the morinkhuur (horse-head fiddle) and the tobshuur (two-stringed plucked instrument) alongside guitar, bass and drums. They also use the traditional Mongolian singing style of khoomei (overtone singing in which a single person can produce two or more vocal parts by causing sympathetic vibration through sustained singing of low tones). Many of their songs are about beauty of the environment, highlighting the Mongolian culture's deep love of nature.
